1966 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

1966 held at Orlando, Florida.

Champion – Raybestos Brakettes, Stratford, Connecticut (74-4)
Runner Up – Orange Lionettes, Orange, California

Donna Lopiano pitched and won the first final for the Brakettes, she threw a 2-hitter and her RBI was the game winner. Joan Joyce and Nancy Ito were the only ones to get a hit off Lopiano. In the Final Championship Game, Bertha -Ragan Tickey hurled a 3-0 shutout surrendering only 4 hits. Joan Joyce started the game for Orange and went four innings, but came out because of an injury in and was relieved by Lou Albrecht, who finished the game, but not before surrendering the 3 winning runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Tickey had an RBI single to help her own cause and Gladys Crespo drove in 2 runs with another hit.

Ron Weathersby, Bombers (dramatic Walk off 2-run HR in bottom of 8th inning of championship game gave Bombers 4-2 win). Eddie King pitched the game for the Bombers and gave up 5 hits and struck out 7. Bobby Quinn pitched for the Engineers and gave up 4 hits and struck out 7. Quinn also hit a double that drove in one of the two Providence runs. Abe Baker drove in the other run.  For the Bombers, Weldon Haney hit a home run for the Bombers.

This championship for the Bombers was the 8th one in their storied history. This is the most in ASA History.

1966 ASA Women’s Major Slow Pitch Nationals

1966 held at Burlington, North Carolina.

Champion: Dana Gardens, Cincinnati, Ohio (42-1)
Runner Up: Art’s Aces, Omaha, Nebraska

Dana Gardens won their first 4 games by the scores of 22-3, 15-2, 24-0 and 10-3 (71-8 run advantage with 19 HRs), before being sent to the losers bracket by defending champ Art’s Aces 6-3. Art’s went on and won the winners bracket final over Fieldcrest Mills. After Fieldcrest eliminated Satellite Beach and Steele Concrete, Dana Gardens defeated them in a hard fought semi final 6-3 on the strength of Anita Gardner’s grand slam homer. In the first final with the score tied at 1 in the 7th inning, Cindy Windburn started off the inning with a single, went to third on Donna Wolfe’s single and then scored the winning run on Anita Gardner’s Sac Fly to win 2-1. The Final Championship game ended just as close. Dana Gardens defeated Art’s Aces 1-0 on a double by Norma Eschenbrenner and an RBI single by Cindy Windburn. Dot Bailey pitched the 2-1 and 1-0 championship game wins. She only gave up 6 hits in the final game. Barbara Kelley was the pitcher for Art’s Aces and what proved to be two final games dominated by the two best pitchers in the county. This was Dana Garden’s 4th Championship title in 5 years Dana Gardens came into the tournament with a 35-0 undefeated record, They finished 7-1 in the event and 42-1 on the season. The Satellite Comets in their first year of competition finished the year 51-3.

1965 ASA Men’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

1965 held at Maumee, Ohio

Champion – Skip Hogan Athletic Club, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (54-7)
Runner Up – Gatliff Auto Sales, Newport, Kentucky (87-11)

Skip Hogan Athletic Club won this championship in dominating fashion, with tremendous defense and the pitching of Lou DelMastro. Skip’s defeated a great Swing Inn team from Cleveland in the winner’s bracket final 6-2 behind 2 home runs from Paul Tomasovich.

Swing Inn then lost the loser’s bracket final to Gatliff’s 13-5 to finish 3rd. In the championship, that wasn’t even close, Skip’s exploded for 9 home runs in the 23-7 Championship Game victory. They scored 9 runs in the second inning. Bill Downey started it off with a 3-run Homer.

Jimmy Watts had a 2-run homer and Bill Hopkins and George Siford also hit homers in the inning. Bill Hopkins, George Siford and Bill Downey all hit 2 home runs in the game, while Jimmy Wallace, Joe ‘Bull’ Yimen and Paul Tomasovich also hit home runs. Skip AC had 25 hits during the game and their cause was helped by the fact Gatliff committed 5 errors.

Ageless Myron Reinhardt hit .770 (17-22) to lead the Gatliff team, somehow, he was left off the All America team. MVP Pitcher Lou Delmastro upped his ASA National Championship record to 25-2 with this 7-0 performance.

Skip’s were 26-6 in their Pittsburgh Metro League and 18-1 in tournament play for a 54-7 total record.

The final game was a 12 inning pitchers duel between Joan Joyce of Orange Lionettes and Donna Lopiano of Brakettes. In the top of the 12th inning, Joan Joyce walked to lead off the inning for the Lionettes. Nancy Ito’s sacrifice bunt moved her to second base. Sally Palmer hit a ground ball up the middle that Brakettes second basemen, Mary Bennet made a nice play to get the out at first and held Joyce on second base. Louise Albrecht then hit a line drive single down the right field line to score Joyce. In the bottom of the 12th, Joyce retired the side in order to claim the championship for the Orange.

Lou Albrecht, Orange Lionettes (1-0, Won other game with a 2-hit shutout to give the Lionettes 5 straight shutouts wins).

Jackie Rice was 2-2 with a shutout for Erv Lind Florists and Hap Piper was 2-0 as she hurled 2 shutouts.

Jan Berkland of Minneapolis Comets won the batting title by going 5-11, .455, 2 RBI, 3 Runs.

1965 ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

1965 held in Clearwater, Florida.

Champion – Aurora Sealmasters, Aurora, Illinois
Runner Up – Clearwater Bombers, Clearwater, Florida

The Aurora Sealmasters, led by big Joe Lynch on the mound, who rolled through 5 straight opponents to finish 5-0 won the national title over the Clearwater Bombers. Lynch hurled a 2-0 shutout in the finals to give the Aurora squad the title. This was the 13th time in 16 years that Clearwater made it to the finals.

Weldon Haney was the star pitcher for the Bombers and Bobby Quinn for the third place Providence Engineers. The other Sealmaster pitchers, Harvey Sterkal and Charlie Richards both agreed to let Joe Lynch pitch all the games. He was on such a roll at the end of the season and was virtually unhittable. They did not pitch at all, just sat back and watched the big man work.

In the first final game, Hornets Peggy Andrews pitched 6 2/3 inning of a perfect game before giving up consecutive singles to Omaha’s Marcia Lynk, Sid Sindt and Jan McCunn to tie the score at 1-1.

The Hornets won the game in the 9th inning on Barbara Thacker’s single and eventually scored on Peggy Andrews fielder’s choice to win the game 2-1. The Hornets eliminated last year’s champ (Dana Gardens 8-5) and runner-up (Rutenschrorer 6-1) along the way to the final.

In the Final game, Joy Driever’s double plated 2 runs that gave Art’s the 3-1 lead they would never relinquish.

MVP Barbara Kelley of Art’s Aces showed her pitching dominance by hurling 3 shutouts and giving up only 6 runs in 7 games, including a victory over defending champ Dana Gardens 2-1, this after Dana Gardens just scored 65 runs in its previous two games in 45-0 and 20-7 victories.

Peggy Andrews threw a 3-hitter in the championship game but still lost 3-1, as Hornets got 11 hits, but only 1 run as they left too many players on base.. Due to rain, they played 5 games straight with only 10 minute breaks.

1964 ASA Men’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

1964 held at Springfield, Ohio.

Champion – Skip Hogan Athletic Club, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (69-11)
Runner Up – Gatliff Auto Sales, Newport, Kentucky (70-21)

In a National Championship that featured a couple of great comebacks in the history of this event, Musicaro jumped out to an 11-5 lead on homers from Jim Galloway, Oscar Steadman and Lou Russo (3 hits in that game), Zeke Sinicola also had 3 hits for Musicaro’s – everybody at the tournament thought it was going to be a Musicaro-Gatliff championship matchup …. But, Gatliff come back in their usual way and scored 7 runs in the 5th inning to eventually win 13-11.

In the final, Skips came came twice in the last two innings. Trailing 12-7 in the bottom of the 6th, the Skips scored 6 runs, highlighted by Paul Tomasovich’s (Tomasovich had 2 HR in the game) homer to give his team a 13-12 lead.

Gatliff’s came back with 4 runs in the top of the 7th behind Bob Harrison’s HR (That was Harrison’s 3rd of the game) to take a 16-13 lead. Skips pushed across 2 runs with a series of hits and with 2 outs, up comes George Siford of Skip’s to pinch hit with with 2 runners on base.

Siford hits a dramatic walk off 3-run homer to give Skip’s the championship 18-16 over Gatliff.

Lost in all the commotion was the incredible feat pulled off by TWUA’s Don Arndt, as he had a weekend for the ages. It was stated that he started the tournament with 22 consecutive hits. He finished up 24-26 for a .923 average and also was the Home Run leader with 10. He was also walked intentionally 9 times.

The lone run in the championship game was scored in the 4th inning as Marlene Piper singled, Carolyn Fitzwater sacrificed her over to second, then Hal Piper’s broken bat single scored Marlene Piper with the run , which turned out to be the championship winning run. Jackie Rice pitched a 2-hit shutout and struck out 2. Losing pitcher, Joan Joyce surrendered 5 hits and struck out 5.

Jackie Rice gave her MVP Award to Bertha Ragan-Tickey. Bertha pitched in all 9 games, 67 K in 59 IP, 6-2, lost first game, won 6 straight shutouts, 50 scoreless innings, lost final 1-0.

In the first final, Dudley hurled a 1-0, 1-hit shutout and then in the final championship game, Bonnie Jones defeated the great Herb Dudley 1-0 in an 8-inning thriller.
