2001 ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

2001 held at Decatur, Illinois on August 3-7.

Champion – Frontier Players Casino, St. Joseph, Missouri (50-17)
Runner Up – Decatur Pride, Decatur, Illinois

  • MVP – Kerry Shaw, Frontier Players Casino
  • Batting Leader – Trent Rubley, The Farm – .471
  • HR Leader – Steve Hovell, 51 Dukes – 3
  • Herb Dudley Pitching Award – Rob O’Brien, Frontier Players Saloon

Frontier Players Casino won their first 3 games before running into Darren Zack and the Decatur Pride and Zack silenced them in the 5-0 winners bracket win.

In the losers bracket, The Farm eliminated the NY Smokers 6-0 to advance to the losers bracket final against Frontier Saloon, only to be defeated 5-2. Frontier then had to defeat the Decatur Pride twice to claim the title. Well, they did so, 1-0 and 3-1 to win the championship. Rob O’Brien hurled a 1-0 no hitter in the first final. Then he bounced right back with a stellar effort, limiting the Pride to just 4 hits in the 3-1 victory, including a Boomer Brush home run.

Including the 5 innings he pitched in the losers bracket final, he hurled 19 innings on the day, allowing just 1 run. O’Brien was at his best in the 6th inning of the final championship game, as the Pride trailed 3-1. Ehren Earleywine led off the inning with a single, then O’Brien struck out the next 3 batters. In the first final, Kerry Shaw hit a hard line drive off Darren Zach to plate the winning run in the 1-0 thriller. Shaw was 3 for 3 in the game.

Doug Middleton (1-1, shutout, save) and Terry Luster (1-0) also pitched for Frontier.

Mike White (1-1) pitched for the Pride.

2001 ASA Girls Gold 18-Under Fast Pitch Nationals

2001 held in Marietta, Georgia on July 30 – August 5.

Champion – Katy Cruisers Gold, Katy, Texas
Runner Up – California Cruisers, La Palma, California

Simple logic dictates that it’s better to pitch to a batter with the bases loaded, rather than intentionally walk her. She might strike out, ground into a double play, pop up, whatever, but a run is in no way guaranteed.

California Cruisers manager Ron McCard agreed, choosing to pitch to Katy Cruisers cleanup hitter Iyhia McMichael in that situation Sunday.

On the second pitch, McMichael hit a grand slam that landed well beyond the left field fence to give the Katy Cruisers a 5-0 victory over California and their second consecutive ASA Girls Gold 18-and-under Fastpitch National Tournament championship in Marietta. Katy went 9-0 in the tournament, including two wins in pool play.

“This one’s just so much sweeter because we didn’t lose,” Katy manager Jimmy Lyons said. “And nobody’s ever won this back-to-back, so that makes it ever sweeter. It was destiny.”

Opposing coaches had taken the bat out of McMichael’s hands four times over the final two days out of respect for one of the tournament’s most dangerous hitters. But after Tina Boutelle, Sara Fitzgerald and Tiffany Anders hit consecutive singles in the third inning, California pitcher Summer Tobias had no choice but to pitch to McMichael.

“It was just so frustrating because I was in a slump, and all I wanted to do was go up there and hit,” McMichael said. “But I never really got that chance until they were absolutely forced to pitch to me.”

“Come on, what am I gonna do, walk her?” McCard said. “Even though she is one of the best hitters here, we still wanted to play the percent-ages and bet on a ground-out or a double play.”

Back in June, McMichael helped Katy defeat California in similar fashion in a national qualifier tournament by hitting an extra-inning double to score the winning run. Same pitcher, same pitch.

“She threw it to me in June, so I kinda felt what was coming,” McMichael said. “I just knew.”

Defending national champion Katy Cruisers Gold defeated Sudden Impact 3-0 behind 17 strikeouts from U.S. National Team player Cat Osterman on Saturday.

2000 ASA Men’s Super Slow Pitch Nationals

2000 held at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida on September 15-17.

Champion – Team TPS, Louisville, Kentucky (79-15)
Runner Up – Bell Corp/Easton, Tampa, Florida (59-27)

The Championship went to the “if” game as Team TPS had to double dip Bell Corp. and they did; Team TPS 39-13 and 41-21.

On Sunday afternoon at approximately 5:30 Eastern time Team TPS finally shook the monkey off of it’s back to win one of the most coveted events in slow pitch softball. They won the ASA Men’s Super Division crown. Team TPS who has just announced that it will not sponsor a super softball tTeam in 2001 finally won one of the big ones.

The last two years the national championships have eluded them and now they have finally won and get to take one of the biggest prizes in softball back to Louisville. I am very happy for the players and management from Team TPS. There is nothing harder than winning when you are supposed to win. Team TPS has never quit trying to achieve a goal that they sat out to achieve two years ago. Winning a national title.

The story is already out about them not sponsoring a team next year but do people understand the reasoning behind it? I think Hank Garris has finally showed the softball world why he has been one of if not the leader in almost every TPS Power Ratings category the last couple of years. He put on quite a display of power this weekend as he helped lead the Team TPS ball club to the ASA Men’s Super World Series Crown.

Team TPS came charging out of the losers bracket and defeated Bell Corp/Easton twice to take the coveted award. They won 39-18 in the first game and then ran up a 28-5 lead after 2 innings to secure them the championship title in the second game 41-21. Hank walked away with all of the awards as he led the tournament in home runs and on base percentage. He was also tabbed with the MVP award to top off a tremendous weekend.

Team TPS got up on Sunday morning and it was liked someone had switched the light back on. They scored over 100 runs in the 3 games they played on Sunday. Hank was leading the way on Sunday and Jeff Wallace, Rusty Bumgardner, Randall Boone and the rest of the boys just followed suit.

I got to speak with Hank Bassett last night briefly and this is what he had to say about the boys from Louisville. “I know how awesome our offensive attack looked yesterday but I want people to know just how great our defense was also. The outfield played like I don’t know what. I have been around softball for quite some time now but I do not believe I have ever seen a better display of defense from an outfield as I saw this past weekend from the Trio from Team TPS.”

Between the 3 of them there had to be at least 10 to 15 diving catches made by them and Higgy had 7 or 8 of those. The outfield really took charge this weekend. They were challenging the players instead of letting them have that extra base. By doing that they kept the hitters on first and this was giving us a chance for some double play balls.”

Team TPS trying to make sure that they win picked up Paul Drilling from Long haul and brought in veteran Rick Weiterman to help with some of the leadership. Paulie did a great job pitching and Rick’s presence was felt immediately.

It has been a long wait for Team TPS but I am sure it was worth it.

2000 ASA Girls’ Class A 16-Under Fastpitch Nationals

2000 held at Garland, TX on August 8-13.

Champion – Tuff-E-Nuff, Cypress, California
Runner Up – Orange County Batbusters, Claremont, California

Tuff-E-Nuff based out of Cypress, Calif, won the double elimination championship in Garland, Tex. by defeating the Orange County Bat Busters by identical 2-1 scores in the finals.

“It feels great to win the title,” said Shanna Mann, a junior at Hart High.

Mann scored the game-winning run for Tuff-E-Nuff off Jaisa Creps’ RBI-single during the second game of the finals. The run not only made the team’s championship dreams a reality, but also gave Tuff-E-Nuff its third national championship in five years.

However, the road to the national championship wasn’t an easy ride. Tuff-E-Nuff played a series of preliminary round games last week during the first three days of the championship before heading into the playoffs.

The team had to win the championship from the losers bracket after falling to the Florida Stingrays in the second round of the playoffs Saturday afternoon.

“It was all business when we were there,” said the 16-year-old Creps. “We were mentally stronger than all the other teams there and that kept us one step ahead of everyone else.”

Faced with elimination, Tuff-E-Nuff lived up to its name by winning five straight games to grab the 2000 ASA National Championship. Each member of the team received a plaque recognizing their accomplishment.

“I knew we could win in the end.” Valencia High sophomore Creps said. “We were really pumped up and focused to win the championship.”

Tuff-E-Nuff won eight straight games in 24 hours en route to the championship.

The win set a personal milestone for Nicole Delfino as well. It marked Delfino’s third championship win in her youth softball travel team career after winning it in 1996 and 1998.

“I have never played at this level of intensity,” said Delfino, who will be joining Mann at Hart for her junior year. “All the teams were committed to winning which made it harder for us to get the championship.”

Tuff-E-Nuff won the Independence Day tournament in Colorado earlier in the year.

Monica Abbott pitched for the Salinas Storm beating the California Rebels who won the Southern California Regional. Abbott also struck out 10 against the Miami Stingrays.
