2010 ASA Men’s B Slow Pitch Nationals

2010 held at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, on October 1-2.

Champion – BSM Sports, Deerfield Beach, Florida (EAST)
Runner Up – Sonny’s Softball Club, Casper, Wyoming (WEST)

BSM Sports of Deerfield Beach, Fla. Claims ASA Men’s Class B title Eastern Champions BSM Sports of Deerfield, Fla., completed a three-game sweep of Sonny’s Softball (Casper, Wy.) on Oct. 2, claiming the Men’s Class B title with a decisive 21 to 11 run-rule victory. A best-of-five series, BSM was led by Most Valuable Player pitcher Jerry Molloy (Orlando, Fla.) who tossed all three victories for the National Champions. Shortstop Randy Vollmer (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) tallied a strong offensive performance for BSM batting .733 (11-for-15) with 10 RBI and 11 runs scored.

“It feels great to be the MVP of this tournament but I couldn’t do it without all of the guys behind me. I wouldn’t be possible without them. I’m very proud of our team for the great effort that we all put into becoming National Champions,” Molloy said. “I think this is the best softball tournament in the country. I will 100-percent be back here going for another National Championship next year. I wouldn’t miss it.”

With a 2-0 series lead after Friday’s play, BSM opened the Championship Game with a combined 18 runs in the first two innings and never looked back. Sonny’s tried to chip away at the BSM lead but failed as the defense of the eventual champions prevailed for the title.

BSM’s Chad Durick (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Steve Allen each tallied two home runs apiece and five RBI while extra hitter Randy Burnett led the way with a 4-for-4 performance. Four BSM players saw double-digit RBI totals for the weekend with Brian Millstead (Jacksonville, Fla.) leading the group with 12.

For Sonny’s, every player contributed a hit in the loss and Manny Liriano (Casper, Wy.) finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.

With the sweep, the East reclaimed the bragging rights in the Men’s Class B after Western Champs Tharaldson Enterprises (Fargo, ND) won the 2009 title.

2010 ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

2010 held at Byers Softball Complex in South Bend, Indiana on August 5-8.

Champion – Kitchener Rivershark Twins, Ambler, Pennsylvania
Runner Up – Broken Bow Travelers, Broken Bow, Nebraska

The Kitchener Rivershark Twins went through the tournament unbeaten (5-0) and defeated the Broken Bow Travelers in the Championship game 1. Their pitching staff combined to pitch three shutouts and only gave up four runs in the five games they won. In the final game, Kitchner scored 9 runs on 8 hits, with 3 HR (Ryan Wolfe 3-run HR, Jeff Goolagong 3-run HR and Pat Shannon 2-run HR) in 5th Inning to put the game and the championship away for good. Broken Bow finished second with a (3-2) record and the Minnesota Angels third at (6-2). Todd Martin started the final game for the Riversharks, hurled 4 innings and then was replaced by Don Scott, who finished up the game and the Championship. Broken Bow’s Adam Folkard was the losing pitcher.

Jeremy Manley (1-1) and Paul Algar (1-1) each won a game for Pueblo.

2010 ASA Women’s Open Slow Pitch Nationals

2010 held at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Champion:  Enough Said, Tallahassee, Florida
Runner Up: Derby Girls, Seattle, Washington

After Enough Said defeated the U.S. Armed Forces 7-5, the Derby Girls eliminated the Armed Forces 18-15 in the loser’s bracket final to get a shot at the championship against Enough Said. But, it wasn’t meant to be. Despite the power of Derby Girls’ Christan Dowling who cracked 5 HR and had 17 RBI in the tournament, Enough Said put the Derby Girls away with a 12-4 Championship game win.

Enough Said went undefeated with a 3-0 record to claim the ASA Women’s Open National Championship title defeating Derby Girls/Combat (3-2), 12-4, in the title game. Enough Said worked its way through the winner’s bracket with two wins against Derby Girls, the Championship victory and 18-7 victory, and a 7-5 win over Armed Forces. Enough Said earned its spot in the Championship Game after defeating Armed Forces 7-5. Armed Forces and Derby Girls/Combat then met up to avoid elimination and earn a spot in the title game.

Derby Girls staved off elimination defeating the Armed Forces 18-15. The Derby Girls took an early 11-2 lead in the first and would hold the lead the entire game.

The Armed Forces wouldn’t go down without a fight scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to threaten but the Derby Girls held their lead for the win.

Misty Smith of the Derby Girls was 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the team. With a victory, the Derby Girls moved on to face Enough Said for the Championship game.

Enough Said and Derby Girls both put a run up in the first with Enough Said scoring three more in the third to take the lead of which they would never give up. It looked like the Derby Girls would cut the lead in the sixth when they loaded up the bases. However a fly out left runners stranded. Enough Said scored three unanswered runs in the top of the seventh to take away a 12-4 victory and National Championship performance for the second consecutive year.

Nikki Hall, who was later named the Batting Champion, was ecstatic about the weekend and very thankful to her teammate, coach and the ASA. Hall finished the tournament 9-for-11 with six runs scored and five RBI, hitting .818.

2009 ASA Men’s A Slow Pitch Nationals

2009 held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on October 1-4.

Long Haul pounded out 40 hits to only 15 for Fence Brokers in finishing the championship as the only undefeated team (they went 4-0).

Geno Buck hurled all of the Long Haul wins and allowed 45 runs in walking away with the tournament’s MVP award. Buck also batted fourth for Long Haul and had a (3-5 performance including a 2-run HR) in the championship game. It was one of 8 home runs hit by Long Haul.

Mike Rhines (3B) and Brett McCollum (SS) had two homers apiece to lead Long Haul.

Fence Brokers hit seven homers with Dennis Schrum leading the offense with a 3-3 performance. Chaun Demars of FenceBrokers was the Home Run leader with 10. He batted .600 and had 22 RBI.

2009 ASA Men’s B Slow Pitch Nationals

Tharaldson Enterprises sweeps through Men’s Class B with 3-0 Record

Tharaldson Enterprises took the Hooters Championship Series Men’s Class B National Championship trophy back to Fargo, N.D., after shutting out Checking/Worth 13-0. It marked the first time in the history of the tournament that the Western Champions have claimed the top spot in the nation.

On Friday, Tharaldson defeated Checking/Worth 18-8 in six innings then topped them again 8-7 for the advantage in the best of five series. The fourth and fifth games were not necessary for Tharaldson to take the championship, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of tournament MVP Chaun Demars. In the first game, he hit a two-RBI single to left field in the second and a two-RBI double to left center in the sixth. Demars hit a two-run homer in the first inning of Game 2 then hit two more two-run blasts, batting 6-for-8, with 10 RBI on the first day of competition.

Demars started Saturday by hitting his sixth home run of the tournament — a two run blast in the bottom of the first. After Demars was intentionally walked in the third and fourth innings, he still made an impact for Tharaldson, scoring on a Jim Schlieman (Fargo, N.D.) sacrifice fly to center field and a Schlieman three RBI double. First baseman Schlieman led Tharaldson on the day with three RBI. “It’s always nice to win but it’s a little extra special when you can lock down an MVP trophy,” said Demars (Becker, Minn.), who went 7-for-9 from the plate with 12 RBI over the three games. “Those don’t happen very often.”

But the greatest contributions to Tharaldson Enterprises may have been from someone on the bench — team sponsor Gary Tharaldson, who flew to Oklahoma City to support the team.“We did this for Gary,” Riggs said.

“I’ve been coaching Gary Tharaldson’s team for 10 years now. I’m not just saying this because he’s our sponsor but he’s the best sponsor in the nation,” Riggs said. “At this level, we get unlimited support from Gary. He’s a softball fanatic. He loves ASA Softball.”

2009 ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch Nationals

2009 held at Byers Softball Complex in South Bend, Indiana on July 30-August 2.

Champion – Farm Tavern, Madison, Wisconsin
Runner Up – NY Gremlins, Clifton Park, New York

The Farm Tavern lost their first game of the tournament to the New York Gremlins and then reeled off 10 consecutive victories, including two straight over the Gremlins to win the ASA Championship. They set all kinds of records in the tournament as a team, they went 116-307 for a .378 batting average and scored 90 total runs and walloped over 20 Home Runs in the event.

The Gremlins, led by pitcher Bryan Newton (3 wins) and Bill Hillhouse’s no hitter won the winner’s bracket.

The Farm pitchers Frank Cox and Darryl Tilley combined for ten wins on the weekend. In the first final, Jim Corbett (2 HR), Donny Hale (2B, HR, 4 RBI), Colin Abbott (HR, 2 RBI) and Rob Gray (HR, RBI) combined for 9 RBIs to lead the Farm to a 12-5 win as the team had 15 hits in the game. In the second final, The Farm stayed hot and collected 13 more hits as Colin Abbott, Jim Corbett and Zenon Winters each homered and combined for 5 RBI to back the pitching of Frank Cox in the 8-1 championship game win. Cox pitched the first final as well and finished (6-0) for the tournament. Darryl Tilley was 4-1 for the Farm.  The Farm Tavern players also set multiple individual ASA National tournament records listed above. They had five players with over ten hits.
