2023 ASA Men’s B Slow Pitch Nationals

2023 held at Hall of Fame Stadium Complex in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 29-30.

Champion – Stoop/Schmidt Roofing, Sartell, Minnesota
Runner Up – Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF, Gladewater, Texas

The final game of the 2023 USA Softball Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship came down to the wire as Stoop/Schmidt Roofing reigned victorious in the 25-23, nail-biting battle against Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF. The undefeated squad dominated throughout the tournament with five-straight wins and 120 runs scored in pursuit of the prestigious title.

Stoop/Schmidt Roofing entered the Championship contest through the winner’s bracket with a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament after opening up with a 21-19 victory over Comatose/S2N/Monsta on Friday, Sept. 1 at 12 p.m. CT. The squad advanced to face Dirty Vegas/Steel/Envy, pulling out the 29-28 victory before capping the night with a 21-18 win over The Herd. Claiming its spot in the winner’s bracket semi-final matchup on Saturday morning, Stoop/Schmidt Roofing came to play in the back-and-forth battle, walking it off in the seventh with a solo shot to center field to defeat Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF, 24-23, and move on to the title game.

Rolling through the tournament with a 4-1 overall record, Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF kicked off its run with a 37-29 win over Northwoods Elite/Pure in Friday’s noon matchup before claiming back-to-back wins over JEC/Kevitt/P5 Sports and Ductech/Budweiser to advance to the semi-final game against Stoop/Schmidt Roofing on Saturday morning. The squad suffered its first loss in the nail-biting matchup, dropping to the loser’s bracket before bouncing back with a 38-19 victory against The Herd to clinch a spot in the title game for a rematch against Stoop/Schmidt Roofing.

Staying hot after a loser’s bracket semifinal win, Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF came out swinging with a solo blast to left to start the game followed by three singles, a double and three home runs to tally eight runs on the board after a half inning of play. Responding with five runs of its own in the bottom of the first, Stoop/Schmidt Roofing cranked out three singles, a double and two home runs to close the gap, 8-5, heading into the second inning. Each team put up three runs in the second inning with Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF tacking on two more in the top of the third before Stoop/Schmidt Roofing opened up with an offensive explosion with nine runs on two outs to take the lead, 17-13, after three. Proving to be another competitive game between the two squads, Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF quickly answered back with a handful of base hits capped with a three-run shot over the left field fence to pull ahead 18-17. The lead didn’t last long, however, as Stoop/Schmidt Roofing led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to tie the game before the Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF defense shut it down – limiting the damage to one run.

Situational hitting from Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF in the top of the fifth paid off as a walk, single and a fly out put runners in scoring position – allowing a groundout and a double up the middle to plate two and break the tie. The pinball continued to bounce as Stoop/Schmidt Roofing came back with three to take the lead once again with a 21-20 score in the fifth while Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF also plated three in the top of the sixth to steal back the lead as the end of the game drew near. Coming down to the wire, Stoop/Schmidt Roofing passed the bat with four singles, a triple and a walk to string together four runs and pull ahead by two. Despite a single from Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF in the top of the seventh, the Stoop/Schmidt Roofing defense kept runners off the base paths, making three quick outs to close out the game and seal the 25-23 victory and claim the 2023 USA Softball Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship title.

Stoop/Schmidt Roofing put up impressive numbers throughout the weekend, staying consistent with a .625 team batting average and a .626 on-base percentage. A 1.157 slugging percentage saw the squad crank out a total of 155 hits with 91 singles, 28 doubles, four triples and 32 home runs through five games played – remaining as the only undefeated squad through the two-day tournament.

The Chosen/Thunder/Beloli/RF offense also stayed hot with a batting average of .638 on 187 hits – including 106 singles, 37 doubles, three triples and 41 home runs. The runner-up squad tallied 179 runs through six games played while recording a .672 on-base percentage and reaching first via a walk 36 times.

2022 ASA Men’s B Slow Pitch Nationals

2022 held at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 2-3.

Champion – Rock Run Cabinetry/All Hustle/Silverbacks/Koval/Beloli, Topeka, Indiana
Runner Up – The Herd, Des Moines, Iowa

The 2022 Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship wrapped up on Saturday night with an explosive offensive performance from Rock Run Cabinetry/All Hustle/Silverbacks/Koval/Beloli as it claimed the trophy with back-to-back wins over The Herd. After battling through the loser’s bracket to arrive in the Championship contest, Rock Run posted a 20-12 victory to force an “if-necessary” game before unleashing with a 27-7 (four innings) run-rule victory to earn the National Championship title.

The Herd entered Saturday’s competition sitting in a prime spot with a 2-0 record heading into the winner’s bracket quarterfinal matchup. Perfect performances at the plate from Alex Hovey, Tanner Unkel and Kyle Winter contributed to the 23-hit game and propelled The Herd to a 21-13 win over DNR Miller Concrete to open the day. Moving on to the semifinals, The Herd jumped out to an early lead against Dirt Dogs/Alter Ego/KL&R/RDD before a 10-run fourth inning from the Dirt Dogs stole the lead. Refusing to go down without a fight, The Herd continued to chip away, eventually tying the game in the sixth and breaking it open in the seventh – regaining control and sealing the 25-21 victory to send them to the Championship contest with an undefeated 4-0 record.

Also starting the day on top with a 2-0 record, Rock Run Cabinetry/All Hustle/Silverbacks/Koval/Beloli’s path to the Championship was not as simple after an early 14-13 loss to Dirt Dogs sent them to the loser’s bracket. Determined to fight its way back, Rock Run came out strong in its next two games – earning back-to-back victories over Southern Rooster/Texas5 (30-18) and DNR Miller Concrete (26-8). With a rematch against Dirt Dogs in the semifinal contest, Kyle Miller led the Rock Run offense with three home runs and a double to keep the pressure on and help claim the 23-8 win to advance to the Championship game against The Herd.

After climbing its way through the loser’s bracket, Rock Run entered the Championship contest needing to pull-out a victory in order to force an “if-necessary” game in hopes of claiming the title. A consistent effort at the plate in addition to a seven-run second inning allowed Rock Run to stay on top and defeat The Herd 20-12 – forcing another game and keeping the hope alive.

With an energy that was both unmatched and unstoppable, Rock Run opened its sixth game of the day with a massive 17-run first inning. The team managed to string together nine singles, three doubles and three home runs off the bats of Marcus Miller, Erik Lehman and Glenn Bender to take the early lead and set the tone.

A grand slam from Matt Schrange in the bottom of the frame put The Herd on the board with four runs, but Rock Run answered back with five more of its own in the top of the second to steal back the momentum. With Rock Run leading 22-4 heading into the third inning, Jeremy Slabach sent a solo home run over the left field fence to tack on another run before a series of base hits plated two more runners – extending the Rock Run lead 25-4.

The Herd mustered two runs in the bottom of the inning but Rock Run matched that yet again in the fourth, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with the run-rule in effect as Rock Run led The Herd 27-6. Looking to give his team a chance, Winter led off the inning with a solo shot to right field, but two consecutive line outs followed by a fly out would end the game and seal the 27-7 (four innings) run-rule victory for Rock Run and the 2022 Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship title.

Compiling a 7-1 record through the tournament, Rock Run combined for 181 runs on 211 hits – including 40 doubles, seven triples and 47 home runs while recording a team batting average of .588. Five Rock Run athletes tallied over 20 hits apiece while Kyle Miller and Marcus Miller blasted a tournament-leading nine home runs each. Splitting time in the circle, Lehman and Matthew Chromy limited their opponents to 90 runs and 119 hits to keep the Rock Run defense under control on its quest to the National Championship title.

  • Batting Champion – Erik Lehman, Rock Run Cabinetry/All Hustle/Silverbacks/Koval/Beloli – .762

CHOSEN/THUNDER CLAIM 2021 MEN’S CLASS B SLOW PITCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH BOUNCE-BACK WIN OVER SILVERBACKS/REVOLUTION ATH/KOVAL

The 2021 USA Softball Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship came to an exciting close today as Chosen/Thunder claimed the Championship title with a bounce-back win over Silverbacks/Revolution Ath/Koval in the Championship “if-necessary” game. After posting an undefeated 5-0 record through bracket play, the Thunder suffered their first loss of the weekend in the Championship contest as the Silverbacks pulled out the 19-17 win to force the “if-necessary” game. The Thunder offense proved superior though with a dominating performance to cap the tournament with a 25-5 (five-innings) Championship victory.

Silverbacks jumped out to an early lead in the Championship contest, driving in four runs in the top of the first before allowing Chosen to cut the lead in half with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The back-and-forth scoring would continue through the remainder of the game, with Chosen evening the score at seven in the bottom of the third before Silverbacks responded with a six-run fourth inning to regain the lead. Chosen would plate five in the bottom of the sixth to give them their first lead of the game, but Silverbacks would once again answer back in the top of the seventh to put them on top, 19-17, with three outs remaining in the game. Kendall Welborn and Josh Kirsten would send base hits through the infield to put runners on for Chosen with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but an infield ground out would seal the win for Silverbacks to force the “if-necessary” game.

After suffering their first loss of the tournament, Thunder bounced back even stronger with the help of a 12-run second inning to propel them to the 25-5 run-rule win to secure the Championship trophy. Thunder wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring two in the top of the first with a two-run home run from Brian Renner. That lead did not hold long though as the Silverbacks answered back in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own to even the score, 2-2. Refusing to stay down long, the Thunder offense lit a spark in the top of the second with 10 base hits, two home runs and a grand slam putting them on top, 14-2. The Thunder continued dominating through the third and fourth innings, tacking on eight more runs to their lead before rain at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium forced a weather delay in the bottom of the fourth. The delay showed no affect though as the Thunder returned to the field to limit the Silverback offense to just three runs through the fourth and fifth innings while adding three runs of their own to seal the 25-5 Championship victory.

How the teams made it to the finals:

Chosen/Thunder landed in the Championship Game after outscoring their opponents 107-62 in route to a 5-0 undefeated record through bracket play. With the help of a 11-run fourth inning in their first game of the day, the Thunder pushed past Tharaldson to advance to the winner’s bracket finale against Drip City/Midwest Monsta. Another explosive fourth inning, this time scoring eight runs, helped the squad to a narrow 20-16 victory over Drip City to place them in the Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship trophy game.

Thunder offense combined for 134 hits and 30 home runs in their quest to the Championship contest with Kirsten leading the way with 17 hits and three home runs followed by Justin Gregory with 16 hits and four home runs.

Silverbacks/Revolution Ath/Koval cruised through bracket play with three-straight victories before dropping the 19-15 decision to Drip City in their first game of the day to send them to the loser’s bracket. Wasting no time staying down, the Silverbacks quickly bounced back with a 34-17 win over the Dirt Dogs/FHC before posting a 21-1 (four-innings) run-rule victory over The Nation to advance to the semi-finals. With a trip to the Championship contest on the line and a rematch set against Drip City, the Silverbacks offense proved superior with a 30-10 (four-innings) run-rule win to send Drip City home with the third-place trophy.

Battling through seven games to land in the Championship game, Silverbacks totaled 172 hits and 38 home runs while outscoring their opponents 162-72. Galen Miller led the Silverbacks offense with 22 hits and nine home runs while Dennis Yoder and Jeremy Stabach tallied 21 hits. The Silverbacks were one of three teams to score a tournament-high of 30 or more runs in a game.

  • MVP – Mike Jacobson, Comatose/S2N/Monsta (4 HR, 11 RBI, .818)
  • HR Champion – Kye Winter – Tharaldson Softball (7)
  • Batting Champion – Chris Olson – Ductech/Monsta Athletics (.944)

Comatose/S2N/Monsta closed out Labor Day weekend at USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex by taking home the 2020 USA Softball Men’s Class B Slow Pitch National Championship trophy. Comatose claimed a 22-12 victory over Tharaldson Softball on Championship Day and finished the tournament undefeated with a 5-0 record.

Tharaldson didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, jumping out to a 5-0 lead as Kye Winter and Jay Hartman each went yard while Chris Munch collected a RBI single. Comatose’s Jacob Stadler, Damon Wegner and Matt Stefanski each homered in the bottom half of the frame to give the home squad a 6-5 lead.

Both teams shut down their opponent in the second inning, with Tharaldson turning a double play to strand two Comatose runners on base. Returning to the plate, a two-run home run by Munch gave Tharaldson a one-run lead before David Bobbitt drove in another run. Comatose posted a six-run third inning for a 12-8 lead, with Zack Wegner sending a two-run shot out of the park.

Tharaldson didn’t let up, pushing across two runs in the fourth and fifth innings while keeping Comatose off the board to tie the ballgame at 12-12 after five innings of play. After a 1-2-3 inning from the Comatose defense, the offense came alive with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored 10 runs. Highlighted by grand slam shots from Damon Wegner and Robert Guzman, Stefanski and Jacobson also drove home a pair of runs to put Comatose ahead, 22-12, which turned out to be all Comatose needed to secure the National Championship title.

En route to the Championship Game, Tharaldson posted a 25-5 win over Ductech/Monsta Athletics and a 14-11 victory over Program/Worth/JTLLC/3xtreme earlier in the day. Mike Jacobson took home the tournament MVP award, while Chris Olson was named the Batting Champion and Kye Winter the Home Run Champion.
