Forced into the “if-game” after dropping a 36-27 decision to WC Monsta in the Championship Game, O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s battled through to claim the 2016 Super Slow Pitch National Championship ASA/USA Softball announced today.
The bats came alive for O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s as the team combined for 12 hits en route to claiming the title in a 22-9 win over WC Monsta in the “if-necessary” game. In their first meeting of the day in the Championship Game, O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s took an early lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a two-run home run and a pair of singles.
WC Monsta responded in the bottom of the frame, cutting the lead to one run after plating three runners off a home run and double. WC Monsta would take the lead in the bottom of the second for good, bringing an additional five runners across the plate to make it an 8-5 lead.
O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s plated two in the top of the third inning to cut WC Monsta’s lead to 8-7, but the west coast squad would explode for 11 hits to score 10 runs and extend their lead to 18-7. Five runs in the top of the fourth inning by O&S Cattle/Mr. D kept the game interesting as WC Monsta led by four as they stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
That close lead would soon become a large one as WC Monsta again utilized timely hitting to push their lead to 16 runs. Twelve runs in the top of the fifth inning by O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s brought the game within four runs. Three solo home runs started out the offensive burst before four more shots over the fence brought the game to a 28-24 lead for WC Monsta. Three home runs by WC Monsta in the bottom of the fifth regained the team a comfortable 10-run lead.
Both teams would plate runs in the sixth inning, with WC Monsta holding a 36-27 lead as O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s headed to the plate for their final at-bat. Getting two quick outs, O&S Cattle/Mr. D would get two singles but a fly ball to centerfield ended the game with WC Monsta forcing the “if-necessary” game. In the “if-necessary” game, O&S Cattle/Mr. D got an early 4-0 lead and kept WC Monsta off the board to complete the first inning of play.
WC Monsta would return the favor in the top of the second, keeping O&S Cattle/Mr. D from adding to their lead while tacking on a run of their own to make it a 4-1 game.
O&S Cattle/Mr. D added to their lead in the top of the third with a solo home run and an RBI double before WC Monsta cut it to 6-4 after scoring three in the bottom of the frame thanks to a three-run blast. A six-run fifth inning helped expand O&S Cattle/Mr. D’s lead before tacking on another three runs in the top of the sixth to make it an 18-4 game.
WC Monsta’s bats came alive briefly in the bottom of the sixth, plating three runs on a pair of home runs and singles. That offensive spurt would not be enough, however, as O&S Cattle/Mr. D would score another four runs in the top of the seventh while keeping WC Monsta to just one run in their final at-bat.
For O&S Cattle, Greg Connell had one of of his usual incredible tournaments (17-26, .654, 10 HR, 18 RBI, 17 Runs). Bubba Mack chipped in with a 18-24 (.750) with 8 HR, 18 RBI, 17 Runs.
For the Monstas, Chente Granados (24-33, .727, 7 HR, 20 RBI, 21 Runs), Ryan Dacko (22-31, .710, 13 HR, 26 RBI, 21 Runs), Ryan McClanahan (8 HR, 19 RBI), Pilar Amaya (7 HR, 17 RBI) and Jared Hunt (6 HR, 21 RBI) led the onslaught as WC Monsta hit 73 HR, in their 7 games.
